The Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland is a sculpture of a dying lion designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and shaped in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn. The Lion Monumen was described by Mark Twain as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world”. The The Lion Monumen commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution.
